10 Years

Published on August 22, 2013 By Emily. Updated on June 5, 2014

This week in 2003, I said good–bye to my high school friends and summer job, broke up with my first boyfriend and headed to college out of state. It seems like a million years ago and just yesterday all at once.  It was also probably a little more emotional than my 18 year old self was ready for.

Last weekend Brian and I headed to Maine so I could attend my ten year high school reunion with a good sized group of my peers.  There was a handful of people there who I’ve kept in touch with via Facebook, but there were also many other people who I hadn’t heard anything from or about since the day we walked across the stage.  On the way to the reunion, I mentioned to Brian that I feel like the first 10 year reunion sees the biggest change; ten years ago we were kids, now we have jobs and homes and spouses and kids.  A lot changes between eighteen and twenty-eight.  So I’ve been thinking about the past ten years and how much I’ve changed.  All the phases my life has gone through between high school graduation and now.  It occurred to me that there have been many people who, intentionally and accidentally, have had a huge impact on my life.  I’m pretty sure I haven’t thanked you sufficiently, so I thought I’d take a moment to do so now.  If you’ve been around at all since 2003, you’re probably referenced below, at least once.

Thank you for …

  • helping me pay for my first car purchase

  • putting up with me as a roommate

  • telling me I might not be cut out to be a teacher

  • believing that I could teach two subjects I had no experience in

  • texting me photos of Connecticut traffic

  • taking care of my sister

  • visiting me in the Berkshires

  • promoting my blog more than I do

  • encouraging me to pursue a PhD in history

  • letting your son stay at my house when you didn’t even know me

  • taking me shopping to find clothes that actually fit

  • telling me not to rush things

  • letting me go but always picking up the phone when I called

  • telling me about Evernote

  • visiting me at work in our college library

  • driving me to classroom observations at the crack of dawn

  • inspiring me to start a food blog

  • sending texts that let me know you’re thinking of me

  • making me get out of bed and make something of myself

  • eating all my strange creations

  • continuing to give me clothes and other things you don’t want anymore

  • lending me your car

  • emailing me regularly

  • allowing me to move back home after college graduation

  • making me mix CDs

  • teaching me to can

  • visiting me just in time to endure Valentines Day 2004

Thanks for driving to Colorado with me in my terrible car with no AC! And stopping at Notre Dame on the way ;-)

Exactly 10 years ago today, we were moving into Lewis 3 West. I might have had greenish hair and was probably wearing a Five Iron Frenzy tshirt. I am very glad you were there too.

I just realized that you graduated the same year as my son! I went to my 40th reunion this summer! Don’t blink! Those years go by so very quickly! So glad to call you a friend!

Very nice reflection (he said with a tear in his eye).

I don't have clear words to express my feelings ab I don't have clear words to express my feelings about the state of the world lately. As a teacher and a mother, it has been extra difficult this week to be fully present in my roles without thinking about innocent lives that should have had longer on Earth. How what has happened in each of the many mass shootings this year can happen anywhere. If you are feeling sad and frustrated too, you are not alone.

I don't have answers, but I'm trying to take care of myself and my biological and school families. I'm saying "I love you" a lot to my children and my students. I'm closely following and sharing the work of @everytown while contacting my state and federal representatives and the president. I'm going for walks and getting fresh air and trying not to overload on news. I'm sharing good resources in my stories as I see them.

@thelazygenius' second book, The Lazy Genius Kitchen, is finally here and I'm so excited! I don't purchase many books, but I pre-ordered this last July because I knew it would be right up my alley and then I pre-ordered a second copy because I knew that I'd want to give one away.

Author Kendra Adachi has been one of my favorite voices in recent years. Her principles (shared through her first book, The Lazy Genius Podcast and her Instagram) have helped me focus my priorities and give myself more grace.

This book is NOT a cookbook (it has just 2 recipes), it is a kitchen guide - to help you "have what you need, use what you have, and enjoy it like never before". It is beautiful (full color!) and thoughtful.

I'm very excited to send this book to one of you.

TO ENTER: Leave a comment below with one of your greatest kitchen struggles.
I'll draw a winner at 8 pm on Friday, May 6.

This morning we took advantage of @massmoca's Berk This morning we took advantage of @massmoca's Berkshire Teacher and Social Worker Appreciation Day free admission. After enjoying the student Art Invitational exhibit, the 4 of us took in several of the other galleries. Mass MoCA always impresses and it was delightful to be able to be out in the world with my kids.

Today I finally found my way into @plantconnector, Today I finally found my way into @plantconnector, in its new location on Main Street in North Adams. The shop is incredible - the displays are great and the plants are delightful. There's a refill station with bottles and jars for soaps, detergents and other products, a terrarium bar, and an abundance of sustainable and beautiful products. I'm now in the process of pondering who I can purchase Plant Connector gifts for in the coming months.
