Getting Serious – About Summer (CSA Menu Plan #31)

Published on July 18, 2015 By Emily. Updated on July 18, 2015

Hello world!  Hope everyone’s past week was as good as mine.  I spent 5 days hanging out with my sister and her newborn baby.  I’ve never spent time with a two week old baby before, but we had a great time.  I’m already trying to determine when I can schedule a visit with my nephew again.  While I was on the other side of the state learning how to change diapers, Brian picked up last week’s CSA share.

The pick up, LAST WEEK (Not pictured)

Collards, green beans, tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, lettuce, radishes, cucumbers, kale, beets

Also, 10 pounds of pickling cucumbers, because I’m a glutton for punishment (and I love pickles).

I arrived home on Wednesday evening (via the “leaves on time, but always arrives late Amtrak train to Pittsfield).  Since then, I’ve been settling back in and thinking about where I want the rest of the summer to go.  Things have been pretty non-stop since school ended and I haven’t worked out a summer routine or done much in terms of my personal summer projects.  But, there’s lot of unscheduled time between now and Labor Day and I plan to make the most of it.  I picked up another share of vegetables yesterday.

The pick up, this week:

CSA pick up 7.17.15

Lettuce, green beans, lacinato kale, zucchini, Hakurei turnips, eggplant, assorted tomatoes, cabbage, fennel

The Plan:

(away)

sautéed collards (recommended by my mother-in-law) + creamy polenta + roasted beets kale + chicken sausage frittata + sliced tomatoes eggplant parmesan + pasta + salad leftover eggplant parmesan + green beans Lidia Bastianich’s Boiled Zucchini Salad with Tuna(recommended by my mother-in-law) Roasted Fennel and White Bean Dip (Food52) + toast + salad/other vegetables Cabbage stir fry + soba noodles

Also on the agenda:

Cucumber Ginger Gin Popsicles from Shutterbean

Canning all those cucumbers as pickles…and possibly green beans and blueberry jam too

Apparently, in the weirdness that is 2020, posting Apparently, in the weirdness that is 2020, posting to my Instagram feed was one of the things that didn't make the cut. There are more items than I'd prefer in that category, but recently I've felt like I'm beginning to get my feet firmly planted beneath me again. This fall was so busy with learning how to teach remotely and parent 2 children well. I don't anticipate that life will ever feel not busy, but I've been able to carve out some time lately for activities I've been missing. Making bread is one of those activities. Hopefully, more posts in the feed will be more frequent going forward.

#sponsored All the time we've spent at home lately #sponsored All the time we've spent at home lately has definitely had me looking to expand the snack options in my pantry. I jumped at the chance to try these @sunmaid Sour Raisins and they immediately became one of my daughter's favorite snacks. She likes them because they're reminiscent of candy, I like them because they're technically fruit and they come prepackaged for easy snacking and taking on the go. I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty they are!

This weekend's weather was amazing and my family e This weekend's weather was amazing and my family embarked on the only way to kick off fall: we went apple picking at Jaeschke Orchards in Adams. The parking lot was full, but out in the orchard we hardly came across any other groups. The trees were heavy with apples and we quickly filled our bag. Looking forward to apples for snacks, pie, crisp and turnovers in the coming weeks.
