Goals in Progress: April

Published on May 2, 2011 By Emily. Updated on May 2, 2011

Someone please explain to me how it’s May already.  I’d really like to know how the last 4 months went by so quickly.  Whether I like it or not, its time to evaluate my progress on my 2011 goals.

1.  Waste less time – Lately, I have been doing a better job of using my time well, especially during school.  The theory being that if I can get all my school work done at school, I can do other things (like blogging) when I get home.  The temptation to wander round the school building and socialize during my prep is huge, but having less work to do at home is awesome.

2.  Read a chapter of the bible every day — I did pretty well with this in April.  Now my goal is to read a chapter everyday and get something out of it.  I don’t want reading the bible to become something I do just so I can check it off my list.

3.  Drink more water — The warmer weather is certainly helping me accomplish this one.  Yesterday’s 5k and the tiredness/soreness which followed today reminded me how important it is for me to drink water.

4.  Read at least one book a month—I finished reading The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels–A Love Story at the beginning of the month (highly recommended, by the way) and started Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert not long after.  I’m really hoping that once summer arrives I’ll be able to finally meet my goal of finishing one book a month.  I didn’t think it would be this hard for me to make time for reading, but it really is.

5.  Improve my fitness by going to the gym twice a week and doing sit ups and push ups on off days — Well, I’m still plugging away on the PIPES challenge, even if I’m losing steam and the official ending was today.  I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to do 100 push ups, but I’m planning to keep following the program for a few more weeks.  We’re going to the gym regularly again after a brief hiatus and, as a result of my 5k, I’m thinking about taking up running.  Overall, I’m happy with my activity level.

6.  Open our home at least once a month — Done: we hosted my in-laws for Easter dinner and had a lovely time.  Now we just have to decide who’s coming for April and what we’re feeding them.  I think this is one of my favorite and most fun goals.

7.  Give Relishments a makeover — DONE!  I  redid the site over April break and I hope you’re enjoying the new setup as much as I am.  I’m sure I’ll still make some minor tweaks, but most of the work I’m trying to do now is more content related.

8.  See new things — Brian and I ventured to Albany and Shelburne Falls over our spring break.  We also checked out the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail for a walk one day and really liked it.  It’s well worth exploring if you’re looking for a good local place to walk, run or bike.  Summer is quickly approaching and I’m getting excited about planning a vacation, destination to be determined.

    Hey!
    Nice work!!

In regards to #2 (Bible reading– and getting something out of it) I know exactly what you mean. A few weeks ago I started up “blogging through the gospels” at http://www.momstoolbox.com. (you don’t have to be a Mom to go there…)

    Basic principle:
Assigned reading — a chapter, sometimes half a chapter.
Read one, two or three times.
Pick the ONE verse or group of verses that the Lord is really hitting you with (SCRIPTURE)

Then write your OBSERVATIONS about it.
Then APPLY it to your life,
    and then PRAY about it.

You get a neat little acronym of SOAP, and it is seriously changing my life.

I have been blogging them pretty consistently, if you want to check them out for the idea of formatting, whatever– at:

Oh… and yay on the running. :)

I don't have clear words to express my feelings ab I don't have clear words to express my feelings about the state of the world lately. As a teacher and a mother, it has been extra difficult this week to be fully present in my roles without thinking about innocent lives that should have had longer on Earth. How what has happened in each of the many mass shootings this year can happen anywhere. If you are feeling sad and frustrated too, you are not alone.

I don't have answers, but I'm trying to take care of myself and my biological and school families. I'm saying "I love you" a lot to my children and my students. I'm closely following and sharing the work of @everytown while contacting my state and federal representatives and the president. I'm going for walks and getting fresh air and trying not to overload on news. I'm sharing good resources in my stories as I see them.

@thelazygenius' second book, The Lazy Genius Kitchen, is finally here and I'm so excited! I don't purchase many books, but I pre-ordered this last July because I knew it would be right up my alley and then I pre-ordered a second copy because I knew that I'd want to give one away.

Author Kendra Adachi has been one of my favorite voices in recent years. Her principles (shared through her first book, The Lazy Genius Podcast and her Instagram) have helped me focus my priorities and give myself more grace.

This book is NOT a cookbook (it has just 2 recipes), it is a kitchen guide - to help you "have what you need, use what you have, and enjoy it like never before". It is beautiful (full color!) and thoughtful.

I'm very excited to send this book to one of you.

TO ENTER: Leave a comment below with one of your greatest kitchen struggles.
I'll draw a winner at 8 pm on Friday, May 6.

After enjoying the student Art Invitational exhibit, the 4 of us took in several of the other galleries. Mass MoCA always impresses and it was delightful to be able to be out in the world with my kids.

Today I finally found my way into @plantconnector, Today I finally found my way into @plantconnector, in its new location on Main Street in North Adams. The shop is incredible - the displays are great and the plants are delightful. There's a refill station with bottles and jars for soaps, detergents and other products, a terrarium bar, and an abundance of sustainable and beautiful products. I'm now in the process of pondering who I can purchase Plant Connector gifts for in the coming months.
