Kohlrabi is the Coolest Looking Vegetable

Published on July 20, 2010 By Emily. Updated on July 20, 2010

Meet kohlrabi.  We met 2 weeks ago at our CSA.  Any vegetable that’s bright purple gets points in my book; I’m a sucker for anything purple.  And it just looks cool, with all those “tentacles” sticking out.  It looks more to me like some sort of alien creature than a vegetable (maybe I watch too much TV?), but I’m a firm believer in trying everything at the farm, so we took one home, ate it, and last week got 2 more.

Kohlrabi is apparently part of the cabbage family (?!), but Brian and I peeled, sliced and cooked our more like a potato, in a skillet with oil and dill.  I’m sure there are much more exciting things to do with it, but this tasted pretty darn good.  Trying out vegetables I’d never buy at the supermarket is definitely of the best parts of being (temporary) members of a CSA.  This summer I’ve tried turnips, beets, garlic scapes and greens I’d never had before.  Even better: Today is Tuesday and we get to pick up more vegetables!

What a wild looking veggie! I have never heard or seen it before…and I’m way into vegetables. I might have to go out and find it. :)

I’d check farmers markets. If you track it down, let me know what you think!

Too funny, I have kohlrabi just like that still in my fridge from my CSA. You’ve inspired me to cook them. Two of our best CSA discoveries so far this year were ramps & garlic scapes–the scapes make the BEST PESTO EVER.

I am growing kohlrabi in my organic gsrden. I grated it and tossed in a little lemon thyme along with a dash of raspberry dressing. Delicious!

[…] cool colors.  There’s a lot more to salads then green.  ”Purple haze” carrots, kohlrabi, purple peppers (did I mention I love purple?), nevermind red radishes and striped beets, red leaf […]

Apparently, in the weirdness that is 2020, posting Apparently, in the weirdness that is 2020, posting to my Instagram feed was one of the things that didn't make the cut. There are more items than I'd prefer in that category, but recently I've felt like I'm beginning to get my feet firmly planted beneath me again. This fall was so busy with learning how to teach remotely and parent 2 children well. I don't anticipate that life will ever feel not busy, but I've been able to carve out some time lately for activities I've been missing. Making bread is one of those activities. Hopefully, more posts in the feed will be more frequent going forward.

#sponsored All the time we've spent at home lately #sponsored All the time we've spent at home lately has definitely had me looking to expand the snack options in my pantry. I jumped at the chance to try these @sunmaid Sour Raisins and they immediately became one of my daughter's favorite snacks. She likes them because they're reminiscent of candy, I like them because they're technically fruit and they come prepackaged for easy snacking and taking on the go. I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty they are!

This weekend's weather was amazing and my family e This weekend's weather was amazing and my family embarked on the only way to kick off fall: we went apple picking at Jaeschke Orchards in Adams. The parking lot was full, but out in the orchard we hardly came across any other groups. The trees were heavy with apples and we quickly filled our bag. Looking forward to apples for snacks, pie, crisp and turnovers in the coming weeks.
