The 5 Best Things I Ate in Ocean City

Published on June 29, 2011 By Emily. Updated on June 30, 2011

If you missed it, go read about what we did in Ocean City, New Jersey last week.  Enjoy the absence of food photos while you’re there because below are the 5 best things I ate in Ocean City, in no particular order.  We were told several times by Brian’s uncle and aunt that Ocean City is not known for having impressive food, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t enjoy what we had.  We made sure to indulge in all the boardwalk favorites (gelato, frozen custard, smoothies, fries, taffy, funnel cake…), as well as a few other local establishments.

My mother believes that 95% of the photos I took on vacation were of food. I beg to differ but this post isn’t going to help my case.

1. Taylor’s Pork Roll
Unless you’ve been reading Relishments since early in its life, you probably don’t know about my love of Taylor’s Pork Roll.  4 months after that post, I did in fact visit New Jersey with my husband on our way home from our honeymoon.  We drove by my childhood home and stopped at the supermarket for pork roll because Brian had never tried it.  And that wasn’t acceptable.  Anyway, we discovered Hamburger Construction Company along the boardwalk our first day in Ocean City.  I had a simple pork roll sandwich and Brian had a burger with a slice of pork roll on it.  It tasted exactly the way it was supposed to.

2. Shriver’s Taffy
I’m from a town in Maine that boasts its own taffy factory, but I think my loyalties now lie elsewhere.  Not only does Shriver’s Taffy come in a ridiculous number of flavors, including many unique ones such as hazelnut and white cranberry, but every flavor is delicious and the texture of the taffy is far superior to what I’m used to.  I almost wish we’d bought more (oh, look, you can order online!).

3. Dot’s Pastry Shop
In the 4 days we were in Ocean City, we went to Dot’s twice. It’s the only place we went to twice. The pastries were delicious and they were cheap, around a dollar each. We were pleasantly surprised. The best pastries ever? Probably not-it’s the Jersey Shore, not France. But the donuts and croissants and danishes definitely hit the spot.

4. Cousins Restaurant
Friday was Brian’s birthday and we wanted to grab a meal somewhere nice-ish (in other words, not on the boardwalk). Brian’s family recommended Cousins Restaurant. Since Ocean City is a dry city and no restaurants serve alcohol, we channel our funds into food and we ordered an appetizer (tomato, basil, roasted peppers & fresh mozzarella served with a balsamic glaze), entrees (coconut-crusted tilapia and pasta & crabmeat) and dessert (cheesecake).  Delicious. The wait staff was also extremely attentive and very nice.  In fact, the waitress complimented me on my eyelashes, which has never happened in my entire life and may just go to show that this actually does work.

5. Mallon’s Sticky Buns
Mallon’s Sticky Buns came recommended by Brian’s dad.  Silly me, I presumed that sticky buns would be round cinnamon buns, which aren’t high on my list of breakfast favorites.  I was pleased to discover that’s not what Mallon’s offered; they serve a number of different flavors of sticky buns in a variety of flavors-apricot, blueberry, boysenberry, pineapple, etc.  You can only order by the half dozen or dozen, so we walked out with 6 raspberry sticky  buns.  I was originally concerned that we wouldn’t be able to eat them all, but we managed (it did take us all day though).  The buns were very sticky and heavy, but the fruit filling was delectable.  (And they ship too!)

Those sticky buns sound delectable and maybe a little too sweet for my tastes, but I’m sure if I was in the same situation, I would’ve indulged. :)

We've had pizza night on the menu for a long time, but I knew that I could improve the pizzas that were coming out of my oven. Each week (or so) I've been sharing in my Stories the pizzas I've made with various stores and toppings. I am eight weeks in I've already learned a lot about technique and what I prefer in a pizza crust and toppings. I'm also looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year will hold in my pizza making studies. Check out my highlights for all the pizzas so far!

Apparently, in the weirdness that is 2020, posting Apparently, in the weirdness that is 2020, posting to my Instagram feed was one of the things that didn't make the cut. There are more items than I'd prefer in that category, but recently I've felt like I'm beginning to get my feet firmly planted beneath me again. This fall was so busy with learning how to teach remotely and parent 2 children well. I don't anticipate that life will ever feel not busy, but I've been able to carve out some time lately for activities I've been missing. Making bread is one of those activities. Hopefully, more posts in the feed will be more frequent going forward.

#sponsored All the time we've spent at home lately #sponsored All the time we've spent at home lately has definitely had me looking to expand the snack options in my pantry. I jumped at the chance to try these @sunmaid Sour Raisins and they immediately became one of my daughter's favorite snacks. She likes them because they're reminiscent of candy, I like them because they're technically fruit and they come prepackaged for easy snacking and taking on the go. I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty they are!

This weekend's weather was amazing and my family e This weekend's weather was amazing and my family embarked on the only way to kick off fall: we went apple picking at Jaeschke Orchards in Adams. The parking lot was full, but out in the orchard we hardly came across any other groups. The trees were heavy with apples and we quickly filled our bag. Looking forward to apples for snacks, pie, crisp and turnovers in the coming weeks.
