101 in 1001: One Year In

Published on January 8, 2013 By Emily. Updated on January 8, 2013

373 days ago, I began embarking on my goal of completing 101 goals in 1001 days.  A year into the process seemed to be as good a time as any to post an update on my progress.

Overall, I’m still really happy with my decision to jump on the 101 in 1001 bandwagon.  I love having a list of tasks that I can cross off and be done with, as opposed to having a single vague resolution hanging over my head for 12 months.  The list has pushed me to do things I might have otherwise let pass me by.

I’m pleased to report that in the past year, I’ve completed 25 of the items on my list:

8. Update my passport (October 2012)
11. Take a personal day to do something fun (5/18/2012)
15. Join/start a bible study group (2/6/2012)
20. Make and send a photo Christmas card (2012)
21. Give everyone locally made Christmas gifts (2012)
25. Make a recipe book for my sister (9/29/12)
27. Hike Mount Greylock (9/8/12)
31. Go indoor rock climbing (Central Mass Rock Gym – August 2012)
32. Begin practicing yoga again (July 2012)
36. Travel by train (8/15/12, to HLS 2012 in Boston)
39. Go to Katz’s Delicatessen (5/18/12)
40. Eat at a David Chang restaurant (5/18/12)
43. Go to a wine tasting (8/16/2012)
44. Make a perfect loaf of bread from scratch (challah-3/3/2012)
45. Bake a birthday cake (6/24/2012)
52. Host a cookie swap (2/10/2012)
53. Can jelly or jam (7/26/2012)
55. Make sangria (8/4/12 non-alcoholic)
58. Mail someone baked goods (Ryn-3/12)
73. Attend a Steeple Cats game (7/12/12)
74. Go to a performance at Tanglewood (7/3/12)
76. Attend Gordon College homecoming (10/6/12)
77. Attend a free local college concert (Williams College Gospel Choir – 11/10/12)
88. Write all of my lesson plans a week ahead of schedule (September 2012)
98. Participate in Pimp My Preserve (2012)
101. Participate in a blogger pen pal exchange (HLB Tea Exchange 10/2012)

25 out of 101 makes me a little nervous since I’m more than a third of the way through my allotted time, but many of the tasks on my list are completely manageable if I can remain intentional.  And I feel really proud of some of the things I’ve crossed off, especially climbing Mount Greylock, baking a birthday cake and getting my act together to participate in Pimp My Preserve.

Of the 76 (yikes!) items left on my list, there are a few that I’m a little concerned about:

2. Participate in NaNoWriMo

Since my deadline for my 101 list is September 27, 2014, this year will be the last chance I have to participate in the annual National Novel Writing Month event.  I’ve wanted to do it for years, but every time November rolls around I don’t feel ready and it seems like a lot to blog (or find guest bloggers), take classes, teach, live life and write a 50,000 word novel.

13. Create a photo book of my summer 2011 vacation

It’s January 2013 and I still haven’t done this.  That summer gets a little farther away every day and I’m pretty sure my chances of getting that book done does as well.  We’ll see.

19.  Spend 2012 going through this decluttering/organization calendar.

So, that didn’t happen.  I’d like to find something similar to replace it, but I don’t think a “do this every day” type of plan is going to work for me.  So I’m open to suggestions in order to keep my 101 list at full capacity.

26.  Take a Zumba class

I’m much less interested in taking Zumba now than I was a year ago.  At the moment, I’m much more interested in resuming yoga (again), but my schedule isn’t working out.  I think I may revise this item to “join a fitness class” or something like that.

28.  Run a race in Maine & 33.  Run an entire 5k (no walking breaks)

Running was a big part of my 2011 summer, but I barely made an effort last year.  I’m still trying to determine whether I was just lazy or if running wasn’t really my thing to begin with.  Since if I’m not doing races in western Massachusetts, the chances of a Maine race aren’t great.

66.  Complete 3 projects posted to Pinterest

I use Pinterest, but not nearly as often as some people.  When I do pin things, they tend to be images I like or products I want to buy.  If we buy a house I’d really like to make some furniture and the like, but until then I’m not sure how many projects I’ll try.

87.  Create full year curriculum for all classes I teach

If my course list is ever the same two years in a row, I’ll definitely make this happen.  Otherwise, I’m going to continue constantly redesigning.

It’s hard to believe that 2022 is basically behind us. Though overall this year found me getting back to the person I want to be (post-babies and “post”-pandemic), I did not try nearly as many new recipes this year as I used to. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I’d made note of any new-to-me recipes I wanted to share in this post. This year’s list is short, but delicious. It includes recipes from @budgetbytes, @smittenkitchen and @howsweeteats.

@coastalmainebotanicalgardens continues to be one @coastalmainebotanicalgardens continues to be one of the highlights of all my return trips to Boothbay and their annual Gardens Aglow event continues to impress. It was great to be back to walking the gardens instead of the pandemic drive through and there seemed to be more lights than ever. I'm already looking forward to next year.

Fall in the Berkshires is always incredible, but t Fall in the Berkshires is always incredible, but this year we've had weather that has also been outstanding. The past 2 weekends have included time at Jaeschke Orchards, the Greylock Glen, and the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail as well as stopping to photograph any random foliage I see.
Check out the last slide for video of some feathered friends we saw on a walk.

@freshgrassfestival continues to be one of my favo @freshgrassfestival continues to be one of my favorite events each year, and it doesn't hurt that it's just minutes away from home. Enjoying the festival with my kids is definitely a different experience than without, but it's still a good time. The weather was especially cooperative today which was great for all the laps I did around the @massmoca campus pushing a stroller. I'm already looking forward to next year.
