Highlights: How To

Published on April 17, 2010 By Emily. Updated on April 18, 2010

I usually pick the topic for Highlights based on whatever the blogs I’m subscribed to seem to be talking about most.  However, I’m really sick of hearing about KFC’s new breadless sandwich, The Double Down (let me know if you want more articles, I’ve got 36), and, though I love him and his work, I figured the world didn’t need another post focused on Jamie Oliver.

Luckily, the blogging world was also full of instructional pieces this week.  So, here they are, this week’s Highlights from my Reader.

Highlights for April 11-17: How to…

…Re-Heat leftovers in the microwave.  A useful post with lots of helpful comments from The Kitchn

…Make yogurt and fruit popsicles. I was just talking to Brian about doing this, now someone’s posted about it.  Now I’ll have to do it.

…Save 95% on groceries by shopping at ethnic markets.  Another post from Cheap Healthy Good that lives up to the blog’s name.  Now I just have to locate an ethnic market…

…Cook ramps, according to YumSugar (not that I’ve ever had them, or seen them in a store, but “everyone’s” talking about them!)

…Order wine without looking like an idiot.  Maybe this week will Serious Eats will do a post on “How to not feel offended when you’re carded and told you don’t look like you could possibly be over 21.”

…Chop and chiffonade herbs. Do anyone else’s knife skills suck as much as mine?  I need all the help I can get.

Use coupons without it taking over your life.  Hooray!  I love saving money, but I could never be one of those serious couponers, no offense to my friends that are.

Finally, how to workout–the Facebook way.  (Thanks to Rachel for this one!)

Every Saturday, I choose a theme and highlight blog posts, websites and news articles from my Google Reader which I found interesting (and hope you do too!) If you want more reading, check out “What I’m Reading” on my sidebar.  And don’t forget to add Relishments to your reader!

I’ve got blog posts and news articles in my reader on pretty much any food or healthy living topic you can imagine.  Anyone have any topics they’d like to see highlighted?

Have I mentioned how much I adore your blog? Because it’s a lot.
Great post as always! Now I’m sort of embarrassed to say that I have a post about the Double Down coming up. Sent out four brand new writers (very health-concious people) and asked them try it. The results were pretty funny and only one of them died. Er, refused to try it. Can’t blame him.

Aw, thanks Alex! That’s a huge compliment coming from someone whose blog was mentioned in the NY Times.
There’s a lot worth saying about the Double Down, but since there’s no way I’m going to try it, I really don’t have much to add.

Welcome!

Spring has finally come to the Berkshires! It has Spring has finally come to the Berkshires!
It has been such a joy to finally spend time outside regularly and see everything in bloom.

I bought myself a bike and, after the initial adjustment of learning how to ride again after a nearly 25 year hiatus, it's become one of my favorite ways to experience the outdoors. (None of these photos was taken while riding. I barely stay upright with both hands on the bike.)

Published on December 30, 2022 By Emily. Updated on December 30, 2022

It’s hard to believe that 2022 is basically behind us. Though overall this year found me getting back to the person I want to be (post-babies and “post”-pandemic), I did not try nearly as many new recipes this year as I used to. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I’d made note of any new-to-me recipes I wanted to share in this post. This year’s list is short, but delicious. It includes recipes from @budgetbytes, @smittenkitchen and @howsweeteats.

@coastalmainebotanicalgardens continues to be one @coastalmainebotanicalgardens continues to be one of the highlights of all my return trips to Boothbay and their annual Gardens Aglow event continues to impress. It was great to be back to walking the gardens instead of the pandemic drive through and there seemed to be more lights than ever. I'm already looking forward to next year.

Fall in the Berkshires is always incredible, but t Fall in the Berkshires is always incredible, but this year we've had weather that has also been outstanding. The past 2 weekends have included time at Jaeschke Orchards, the Greylock Glen, and the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail as well as stopping to photograph any random foliage I see.
Check out the last slide for video of some feathered friends we saw on a walk.
