It’s hard to believe that last weekend was the last week of the summer season for our CSA pickup. Just another tangible demonstration of the fact that summer is officially over and winter is quickly approaching. That, and last weekend’s snowstorm. Oh well, all is not lost; we’re doing a winter share again (just like last year) and the first pick up was this week. Now we’ll be picking up our produce biweekly. Get ready for a lot of squash and potatoes.

I still don’t have any regrets about our decision to join a CSA. Almost all of our produce comes from the farm. I know that picking up my vegetables each week forces me to be grateful about where my food is coming from and causes me to eat more vegetables than I normally would.
As usual, there were a few CSA themed recipes of note over the past few weeks:
Barley and Lentil Soup with Swiss Chard (Epicurious)—an excellent way to use some Swiss Chard (the bunches are so big!) and make use of barley, which I never leave enough time to make. Delicious.
Pasta with Broccoli, Goat Cheese and Oregano (Serious Eats) – I don’t think you can ever go wrong with goat cheese and this recipe proved me right. It’s a simple meal to make and makes a ton of food (I think we got 6 or 8 servings out of it).
I’ve debated in the recesses of my own mind whether to join a CSA or not but after seeing how much some of my friends get out of it, I’ll probably do it next year. It might force me to eat more veggies, become even more creative in the kitchen and explore veggies I normally wouldn’t touch (Brussel sprouts, for example).
That’s exactly what having a CSA share has done for us! A year ago, I’d never had kohlrabi, Brussel sprouts or a yellow watermelon. All of them are delicious!
Those veggies are so beautiful!!
Thanks Kristin–they look even better in person!
